Insurances at Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences

Insurances

The students of Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences are insured by Vahinkovakuutusyhtiö If.

The statutory accident insurance of Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences covers accidents and ensuing occupational diseases that students may meet with during their studies or practical training. The cost of medical visits related to them is directly borne by the insurance company.

The precondition for receiving reimbursement for an accident or occupational disease is that the accident has occurred in study-related conditions, in accordance with the curriculum or the degree programme, while participating in practical training equivalent to work or traineeship, or in another place assigned by the organiser of the learning activity or the organisation maintaining the educational institution. The student is also covered during direct travel to and from the educational institution or residence and a traineeship workplace assigned by the organiser of the training.

Under certain conditions, the statutory accident insurance is also valid abroad. Students leaving to study or work abroad must always separately find out about the necessary insurances and other social security, as well as the statutory requirements of the legislation of the country of destination. For insurance matters during international studies, the student shall contact the coordinators in charge of international affairs.

SeAMK also has a voluntary group accident insurance for students, which covers students during their actual school hours, during the classes and breaks, and while participating in common curricular activities organized by the educational institution, such as sports competitions, excursions, visits to exhibitions, museums, factories, etc. The insurance is also valid during direct travel between the venue of events arranged as part of the curriculum and the institution. The insurance is valid worldwide, under certain conditions. The precondition is that the accident is sudden and external, causing a bodily injury, and happens unintentionally on the part of the insured. The group accident insurance does not cover illness, nor an accident taking place on the premises of the institution during the student’s leisure time. The cost of medical visits related to the group accident insurance is first borne by the student, and the student applies for the reimbursement of that cost filing a damage report, or the receipts are later delivered to the insurance company. The insurance company pays the medical cost borne by the student directly into a bank account indicated by the student.

During an unpaid traineeship period in Finland and abroad, the student is also insured against possible material damage caused by them to their employer.

Against accidents to the student’s personal household effects, such as eyeglasses, mobile phone, laptop, we advise the student to buy personal insurance (home insurance).

In case of accident

  1. Go to the nearest provider of care and mention there that you are insured, by order of SeAMK, by IF Oy.
  2. Report the accident as early as possible through the Pro 24 system (Students’ Intra -> Shortcuts -> Insurances).
  3. The person in charge of insurance matters at SeAMK will contact you later for the submission of an accident report to the insurance company.

The information in the notification form of the Pro 24 system is passed on to the staff in charge of security and occupational health and safety of Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences and, regarding accidents, the staff in charge of insurance matters. They will contact you if necessary. Possible personal and health information included in the notification is always confidential.

The employer/organizer of education (SeAMK) is obligated to report on an accident at work or a suspected case of occupational disease within 10 days of service. Please note that the time frame for submitting an accident report is tight and failing to meet the 10-day deadline may, in the worst case, lead to refusal by the insurance company to pay damages.

You can also contact SeAMK by phone or send an email to vakuutus@seamk.fi to book an appointment for preparing the accident report.
