Insurances
Students of Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences (SeAMK) are insured with the insurance company LähiTapiola Oy.
SeAMK’s statutory accident insurance covers accidents or occupational diseases that occur to degree students during practical training or internships. Costs arising from these visits are invoiced directly to the insurance company.
Compensation for an accident or occupational disease requires that the accident occurred under conditions typical for studying according to the curriculum or degree requirements, while the student was participating in practical training comparable to work, an internship, or in another location designated by the organizer of education or the institution’s maintainer. The accident is also covered when it occurs during direct travel from the educational institution or the student’s residence to the internship location designated by the organizer of education, or back.
The statutory accident insurance is valid under certain conditions abroad as well. A student going abroad for studies or an internship must always separately check insurance coverage and other social security, as well as the requirements of the destination country’s national legislation. For matters related to insurance coverage for international studies, students should contact the coordinators responsible for international affairs or the insurance specialist.
The university also has a voluntary group accident insurance for degree students. This insurance is valid during teaching at the institution and during breaks, as well as when participating in joint sports activities, excursions, visits to exhibitions, museums, factories, etc., organized within the framework of the curriculum. The insurance also covers travel for events organized within the curriculum, provided the travel occurs directly between the event location and the institution.
The insurance is valid worldwide under certain conditions. The requirement is that the accident is sudden, external, and causes bodily injury, occurring unintentionally to the insured. The group accident insurance does not cover illness or damage occurring during the student’s free time on the institution’s premises. For damages covered by the group accident insurance, treatment costs are initially paid by the student and later claimed from the insurance company against receipts when filing a damage report, or receipts can be submitted later to the insurance company. The insurance company reimburses the student’s paid treatment costs directly to the bank account provided by the student.
During unpaid internships both in Finland and abroad, the student is also insured against possible material and personal damages caused to the employer at the internship location.
For damage to the student’s personal property (e.g., eyeglasses, mobile phone, laptop), we recommend that the student obtain personal insurance coverage (so-called home insurance).
In case of an accident
- Seek the nearest medical facility and inform them that you are insured by SeAMK through LähiTapiola.
- Report the accident as soon as possible in the Pro 24 system (found in Student Intra → Shortcuts → Insurance).
- A person responsible for SeAMK’s insurance matters will contact you later for the damage report.
The information from the Pro 24 system’s notification form is forwarded to SeAMK’s safety and occupational health officers and those handling insurance matters for accidents. They will contact you if necessary. Any personal or health information included in the notification is always handled confidentially.
The employer/education organizer (SeAMK) must report an occupational accident or suspected occupational disease within 10 working days of becoming aware of the matter. Please note that the deadline for filing a damage report is strict, and exceeding 10 working days may result in denial of compensation by the insurance company.
